"Boom!" (1968) — Tennessee Williams's Extravagant Meditation on Death, Decadence, and Camp
On a remote Mediterranean cliff, a terminally ill millionairess confronts a mysterious poet who may be the Angel of Death himself in this visually stunning, critically panned, and gloriously over-the-top cult classic starring Hollywood's most famous couple.

📖 STORY
Flora "Sissy" Goforth, a wealthy, ailing widow, is spending her final days dictating her scandalous memoirs from her lavish, fortress-like villa on a private island. Her isolated world of pills, servants, and memories is violently disrupted by the arrival of Christopher Flanders, a handsome, penniless poet who scales the cliffs to her estate.
Christopher, known by the ominous nickname "The Angel of Death" for his habit of appearing at the bedsides of the dying, becomes an unsettling fixture in Flora's home. A tense, psychological game of cat and mouse ensues. Flora, in denial of her mortality, is both repelled and fascinated by him. As she alternates between grandiosity and vulnerability, Christopher forces her to confront her life, her fears, and the inevitable "Boom!"—his metaphor for the shock of each moment of being alive. Their confrontation builds to a haunting conclusion about life, loss, and release.

🏛️ CULTURAL LEGACY
Upon release, Boom! was eviscerated by critics as "an ordeal in tedium" and "a pointless, pompous nightmare". However, its sheer audacity, extravagant style, and unrestrained performances have since earned it a beloved cult status as a masterpiece of high camp. It is now celebrated as a fascinating, flawed artifact of 1960s excess and a bold, if failed, artistic statement from a major playwright and two of the world's biggest stars.

💬 DISCUSSION
Is Boom! a profound meditation on death or an unintentional comedy of errors? Did the miscasting of the vibrant Taylor and world-weary Burton ruin the film or make it the camp classic it is today? Can a film be both a critical/financial failure and a resounding success in the eyes of a cult audience?
