Sam Harris argues we can have morality without God by identifying what causes misery and what promotes flourishing. But philosopher Philip Goff exposes a major problem: Harris never explains what actually makes it true that everyone should aim for flourishing. If this is just a goal in our minds, why should others agree? Morality by definition involves a "should"—something that obligates people regardless of agreement. As Goff points out, it's like Newton observing apples fall but never explaining gravity. Moral "shoulds" require something beyond human minds. Only if there's a God—a moral reality outside of us—does it make sense to say we should act one way rather than another.
