The Gates of Hades as mentioned in Matthew 16:18​ is a direct reference to the pass of Thermopylae where the Battle of Thermopylae occurred (as dipicted in the movie "300"). Here Jesus is optimistic about the power and success of his church. This stands in stark contrast to the pessimism expressed by many modern Christians.
