Anglo-Saxon, or Old English (Englisċ, pronounced [ˈeŋɡliʃ]), is the earliest recorded form of the English language. Like its descendant, it belongs to the West Germanic group of the Indo-European language family, which includes modern languages such as German and Dutch.
Compared to modern English, Anglo-Saxon maintained a much closer proximity to its continental siblings. This is unsurprising, as it was brought to Britain by Germanic settlers and conquerors from the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes tribes in the mid-5th century, with the first Old English literary works dating back to the mid-7th century.
The most famous of these is the poem Beowulf. This language was spoken in England, as well as in southern and eastern Scotland. After the Norman Conquest of 1066, English was temporarily replaced among the upper classes by Anglo-Norman, a relative of French.
During this period, English was heavily influenced by Anglo-Norman, developing into the phase now known as Middle English in England and Early Scots in Scotland. Therefore, the Norman Conquest is considered the end of the Old English era.
