His disciples came with a complaint: Rabbi, the one you testified about - everyone is going to him now. The crowds at John's baptism were shrinking. The crowds at Jesus's were growing. They saw a problem.

John saw it differently.

No one can receive anything except what has been given from heaven. John didn't build his ministry. He received it. And if it was given, it could be redirected anywhere heaven chose.

I am not the Christ. I was sent before him. The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The best man stands and listens for the bridegroom's voice, and rejoices greatly when he hears it. So this joy of mine has been made complete.

Complete. Not threatened. Complete. John's joy reached fullness precisely when Jesus took center stage. The best man doesn't sulk when the groom arrives. He celebrates.

He must increase; I must decrease.

Eight words that demolish every ego. We want to increase. We measure worth by whether crowds grow or shrink. We panic when someone else draws attention that used to be ours. We forget none of it was ours to begin with.
