This scorpionfish has a row of spines that are equipped with venom glands. The venom is a highly potent neurotoxin that causes even a large human to be overcome with pain. The proteins in the venom cause intense pain, swelling, nausea, and potential systemic effects like low blood pressure, paralysis, and respiratory issues. In extreme cases, the venom can cause cardiac arrythmia. Victims can find moderate relief from flushing the area with hot water.
The scorpionfish is also a master of disguise, using its colour and texture to blend in perfectly with the algae and coral. It is this that makes the scorpionfish so dangerous to swimmers and scuba divers. They are easily stepped on or touched accidentally.
The scorpionfish lies in wait, inhaling its prey when it passes in front of the invisible predator. It has a voracious appetite and will consume many smaller fish each day.
