Genuine Human Slop.
Proven Oil reserves from OPEC.

Oil is a wonderful thing.

Its oily. And it burns. And its cheap.

And you can fight wars over it.

How much is there?

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC, publishes statistical data from time to time.

Now new fields are occasionally discovered, so it is important to see if there has been much of a change in these numbers. This might indicate new sources. The units used here are the Million US Barrel, or Mega Barrel.

In 20 20, the total world proven reserves were listed as about 1.5 million Mega Barrels.

By 20 25, the total world reserves have grown to almost 1.57 million Mega Barrels, or an increase of 2,340 Mega barrels, or zero point one five percent. This would tend to indicate unlikelihood of new discoveries massively changing the reserve numbers.

Older estimates, for example, Sage dot org has a paper listing total estimated world reserves, have hovered around a lowest value of 2.1 million mega barrels and 3.3 million mega barrels.

Best data seems to be the OPEC data, and will be used here.

For the Middle east, the increase in oil reserves from 20 20 to 20 25 was a mere 5,700 Mega barrels, or 0.7 percent.

The OECD Americas, or Canada, Chile, Mexico and the United States, increased reserves by 8,862 mega barrels. Of this, 9,179 million barrels was from the United States, a 25 percent increase for the U S A, with Mexico decreasing its reserve estimates by 362 Mega Barrels, decreasing its reserves by 6 percent.

And, of course, Venezuela comes to mind.

In 20 20 it had 303 thousand, 561 million barrels of proven reserves.
By 20 25 the reserves had been adjusted down by 340 Mega barrels, zero point one percent relative to 20 20.

As a comparison, the oil consumption of the state of California on 20 23 was 648 mega barrels.
So the entire world reserves would power California at current levels for about 2,400 years.

For a world consumption of 36,500 mega barrels per day. World reserves would suffice for just under 43 years, or around 20 68.
That’s a pretty stunning number. World-o-meters dot info lists the result as 47 years.
And does confirm the approximate values, reserves of 1.3 Million Mega Barrels and a consumption of 35,400 Mega Barrels per year. Statista dot com has a demand of 105.5 mega barrels per day, which is about 38,500 Mega Barrels per year.

This would tend to indicate, with the smallness of reserve increases, except for the U S A, that the situation is relatively sensitive. 43 years ago from 20 26 was, on 19 83. 75 years ago, it was 19 51.

That was the year of the Korean War, with General MACARTHUR being fired by Harry Truman.
The year of just before hydrogen bombs.
The Year of I Love Lucy.
