Josh Jetspeed was never meant to fly a spaceship, he was supposed to guard the hangar doors. But when a mix-up involving a malfunctioning keycard ends with him accidentally stealing the Alpha-9 starship, Josh finds himself launched into deep space with no plan, no credentials, and absolutely no right to call himself "Captain."

While improvising his way through asteroid fields, Josh crosses paths with a mysterious alien child named Kohren hidden in an escape pod drifting nearby. Those searching for the child are Princess Gelexxa of the Planet Vesperus and Buckthorn, a sarcastic beaver-like bounty hunter with a code of honor that shifts depending on who's paying. They slowly see through his "captain" act until the trio discovers that Kohren is the last of an ancient species that holds the key to stopping a rising cosmic war.

Now that the fate of the universe rests in the hands of a fake captain, a fallen princess, a mercenary beaver, and a godlike super-powered toddler, Josh realizes that he may not be the hero the galaxy asked for but he might just be the one it needs.
