Captain Albert Ebbs (John Gregson) is a seasoned sea dog who spent his life on gritty cargo ships. His world is turned upside down when he is promoted to command the SS Queen Adelaide, a flagship luxury liner bound for Australia.

Ebbs is a master of the sea but a disaster in the ballroom. Between judging beauty contests, dodging the advances of attractive widows like Mrs. Judd (Peggy Cummins), and trying to stop his Chief Officer (Donald Sinden) from flirting with every passenger, he realizes his crew is actually running a massive smuggling operation right under his nose.
