Johnny Cash's final confession in "Hurt"

Johnny Cash recorded "Hurt" in 2002 at 70 years old, transforming a Nine Inch Nails song into what would become one of music history's most powerful farewells. At the time, Cash was battling diabetes and severe heart problems, physically weakened but artistically at his most vulnerable and honest. The original 1994 track spoke of pain and self-destruction, but in Cash's weathered voice, it gained unexpected weight and became a reflection on an entire lifetime.

When producer Rick Rubin presented the song, Cash immediately connected with its themes, reportedly saying it spoke to his entire life. During recording sessions, he could barely stand, and his voice had lost much of its former power, but what remained was pure truth. Each verse sounded like a settling of accounts with everything he had been, everything he had lost along the way, and everything he could never repair. The recording appeared on "American IV: The Man Comes Around" and transcended the typical cover song format, becoming instead a personal confession set to music.

The iconic music video, directed by Mark Romanek and filmed in February 2003, captured Cash surrounded by the remnants of his legendary career. His wife June Carter, who appeared briefly in the footage, passed away in May 2003, just three months after filming. Cash, devastated by her loss, followed four months later on September 12, 2003. The video juxtaposes images of Cash in his prime with the fragile artist in his final months, creating a visual meditation on mortality, legacy, and regret. Trent Reznor, who wrote the original song, perfectly summarized its transformation when he said that after hearing Cash's version, the song no longer belonged to him. Today, "Hurt" stands as one of the most honest artistic farewells ever recorded, a powerful reminder of music's ability to capture the human experience in its rawest form.
