Trip Report - Lumber River 1/10/2026
Ten paddlers enjoyed miracle weather of nearly 80 degrees in January, paddling about 8 miles of the Lumber River, starting at Three Bridges Road and ending at Lowe's Road between Pembroke and Lumberton. The water level was 7.8 at the Maxton gage, the river is low for this time of year. So low, in fact, that we discovered a spring running out of the bank at the Three Bridge put-in, this spring is often submerged in higher water levels.
We only had to one easy portage. This section has significant downfall but all was passable with a little work or bump over. At higher levels some of those obstacles will become portages, but overall the trip was not energetic or problematic. This section has good fall with a quick current and good scenery. It took us about 4 hours including lunch to travel the river.
