Deny Self
(Total Commitment to Christ)

Text: Luke 9:23

Objective: that the brethren may have a total commitment to the work of the Lord which honors God

Intro:
Define: commitment, deny/ing, self, total, work of the Lord

Many begin well but few finish well. The Christian life requires not just a profession, but commitment. God calls His people to wholehearted devotion, not half-hearted religion.

Luke 9:23 — “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
- essence of biblical commitment.

I. The Biblical Foundation Of Commitment
1. Commitment begins with a decision
Joshua 24:15 — “Choose you this day whom ye will serve…”
Commitment is not accidental — it is chosen.
2. Commitment is rooted in love – specially should be - for God
Deuteronomy 6:5 — “Thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart…”
Love fuels loyalty.
3. Commitment involves surrender
Romans 12:1 — “Present your bodies a living sacrifice…”
*Sacrifice is the language of commitment.

II. Three Areas Where Christians Must Be Committed
A. Commitment to Christ Personally
Commitment is not to a church program or tradition first – but to Christ Himself.
-“follow me”
Self-Denial - “let him deny himself…” (Luke 9:23)
Daily Cross-bearing
- Not a one-time act — “daily” (Luke 9:23)
Obedience - John 14:15 — “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
Priority - Matthew 6:33 — “seek ye first the kingdom of God…”
— Modern Application:
Many want Christ as Savior, few want Him as Lord.
B. Commitment to God’s Word
Meditation
Joshua 1:8 — “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth…”
Obedience - James 1:22 — “Be ye doers of the word…”
Saturation - Psalm 119:11 — “Thy word have I hid in mine heart…”
— Application:
Christians today often have multiple Bibles but little Bible in them.
C. Commitment to God’s Work
Steadfastness -- 1 Corinthians 15:58 — “Be ye stedfast, unmoveable…”
Faithfulness - Galatians 6:9 — “let us not be weary in well doing…”
Wholeheartedness – Col. 3:23 — “whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord…”
— Illustration:
God is not honored by leftover devotion or part-time service.

III. The Cost Of Commitment
Luke 14:27–28 — count the cost
Commitment will cost:
Convenience/Comfort, Time, Self-will, Money, Popularity, Effort/Labor
But the reward outweighs the cost.
Philippians 1:21 — “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

IV. The Reward Of Commitment
God rewards those who are committed:
- Spiritual Stability - “thy thoughts shall be established” (Proverbs 16:3)
Divine Direction and Fulfillment - “he shall bring it to pass” (Psalm 37:5)
Eternal Honor/Rewards - “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Mat. 25:21)

Finale:
Commitment is not for the casual; it is for the converted.
Call to response:
Will you commit to Christ?
Will you commit to His Word?
Will you commit to His Work?

Joshua 24:15 — “as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Message/conclusion:
Let us have total commitment to the work of the Lord which then will honor God
