Since its formation in 2024, the Alliance of Sahel States – comprising Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso – has faced relentless attacks by foreign-backed terrorists, economic isolation and violations of its sovereignty by Western-aligned African states, and endless slander from Western and Western-aligned media.

Burkina Faso President, Ibrahim Traoré, on his part, has faced numerous attempts on his life since assuming office in September, 2022.

In September 2023, high-ranking officials in Burkina Faso were arrested after a failed coup attempt. In January 2024, Burkinabé authorities announced yet another foiled coup, and again in April 2025.

And on the eve of 3 January, 2026, the people of Burkina Faso thwarted yet another attempt by external actors to plunge their country into chaos. The country’s Security Minister, Mahamadou Sana, in a televised broadcast, revealed that the coup plotters planned to carry out a series of targeted assassinations, with the prime target being President Traoré. French-aligned Côte d'Ivoire, and former Burkina Faso leader Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba were named in the plot.

Together with its fellow AES members, Burkina Faso has continued to record economic and geopolitical wins in the face of its externally-imposed challenges. Meanwhile, its former colonizer France – whose confirmed involvement in this latest coup plot would surprise absolutely no one – continues to crumble under the weight of its dwindling influence in Africa.
