The "DARK Act" (Deny Americans the Right to Know Act) was a controversial 2016 U.S. law (Public Law 114-216) that preempted state mandatory GMO labeling laws, creating a national voluntary system, largely criticized by consumer groups for blocking transparent disclosure of genetically engineered (GE) foods through easy-to-read labels, allowing QR codes or 800 numbers instead, and allowing some modified foods to be labeled "natural".
While officially titled the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, its acronym highlighted opposition to it becoming law, though it did pass and was signed by President Obama.

Why QR codes matter in food labeling regulations
Across the food and beverage industry, regulations are evolving. Government agencies like the FDA are introducing stricter rules to improve transparency, food safety, and supply chain traceability.
This includes new mandates for key data elements, additional recordkeeping, and faster identification of contaminated food products.
QR codes on food packaging offer a cost-effective, scalable way to comply.
They provide instant access to detailed information — from a product’s origin to allergen warnings — without crowding the label.

From compliance to connection:
The dual role of QR codes
While the initial push to adopt QR codes stems from regulatory pressure, food companies quickly realize the marketing potential. A dynamic QR code doesn’t just meet a legal requirement — it creates a touchpoint. It can educate consumers, build trust, and differentiate brands.
You can update QR code data at any time, without reprinting packaging.
That flexibility is critical in an industry where laws change, recalls happen, and information needs to evolve.
There's a bill in the Senate that would erase state laws to label GMOs passed in Vermont, Connecticut and Maine, and replace them with complicated computer QR codes or 800 numbers consumers would have to access instead of simple on-package labeling.
But QR code labeling is really no labeling at all – it’s discriminatory, incredibly burdensome, and even a threat to our privacy.
Only 64 percent of Americans own a smartphone. That means that more than a third of all Americans will not be able to use this form of labeling. Moreover, those left out are disproportionately low income and those living in non-urban areas.
According to Pew Research Center, only 50% of low income people in the U.S. own a smartphone; only 52% of people living in rural areas own a smartphone; and only 27% of seniors own a smartphone.
Even those who do own smartphones are not guaranteed consistent access to the internet.
At the end of the day, a substantial majority of Americans would be deprived of their right to know if GE labeling were done through QR codes.
Knowing about the foods you purchase should be the right of everyone, not a luxury available only to those who can afford particular technologies and the capabilities to use them.
Tell the Senate to label GMOs, not hide them
HEALTH COACH INSIGHT: Most people think food labels tell the whole truth, but last week we heard a Campbell’s Soup VP tell us it's not the ingredients, but the "process."
What if the real danger of processed food is the process—the part you never see and the part that never appears on any label?
In this video, I peel back the label and expose what’s REALLY going on inside processed foods. Let's discuss:
✔ why wheat flour isn’t wheat anymore
✔ the difference between real maple syrup and “pancake syrup”
✔ why ice cream is now called a “frozen dairy dessert”
✔ how processing—not ingredients—creates addiction

History of Soybeans and Soyfoods in Latin America
https://www.soyinfocenter.com/HSS/latin_america2.php
Genetically modified (GM) soya was introduced into Argentina in 1996 without any kind of debate either in Congress or among the public.
Since then, its cultivation has spread across the country like wildfire. Today more than half of the country’s arable land is planted with soya.
No other country in the world has devoted such a large area to a single GM crop.
Argentina provides a unique opportunity to investigate the consequences for a country of intensive GMO cultivation.
Rural and Urban Women for Food Sovereignty
In November 2008 the third meeting of Rural and Urban Women for Food Sovereignty was held in Santa Fé in Argentina.
One of the working groups decided to hold their two-day seminar on the railway line owned by the private company Belgrano Cargas, which is used during harvest to transport soya beans.
It was a protest, the women said, against the “soya model” and against the privatisation of the railways.
For 48 hours they halted all traffic on the line, causing losses to the rail company estimated at US$200,000.
These are extracts from the document that the women issued to explain their action:
• The soya model contaminates our environment and, by concentrating land and the means of production, expels peasant communities from the land they have occupied for many years, increasing the vulnerability of all, but particularly of women and children.
• You only have to look along the edges of the so-called “roads of production” to catch a glimpse of the life to which expelled people are condemned. They are forced to live in dark, forgotten places, where the only light comes from gambling dens and bars.
• The women are economically and sexually exploited, not only by men but by a whole ideological system validated by our society.
• To attack women is to attack food sovereignty, since women produce 80 per cent of the food that the world consumes. It is for this reason that the struggle for food sovereignty, the struggle to stay on the land and recover our capacity to produce what we eat, is also a struggle to regain sovereignty over our bodies.
• As we women are responsible for feeding our families, we have to be to be at forefront of the struggle to replace a model of consumption, commercialisation and production that fills the coffers of transnational companies at the expense of the well-being of our people.
• We are fighting for a new economy that respects people and nature, that includes everyone and guarantees the just distribution of all production so that everyone can live a life of dignity, happiness, autonomy and sovereignty.
• NO TO MONOCULTURE! YES TO TRAINS FOR ALL (BUT NOT FOR SOYA)!
The government promotes using Animal dung as fertilizer, however if the animals have eaten gmo crops or what they ate had herbicides or chemicals on them could kill your soil.
