"Thresher and Scorpion – Uncovering the Depths"
Join me & Big H for a somber yet powerful episode honoring the Silent Service's most profound losses: the USS Thresher (SSN-593) in 1963 and the USS Scorpion (SSN-589) in 1968.
In the wake of these tragedies, the Navy lacked the means for a full deep-sea investigation. That changed when Cmdr. Les Parsons, as Commanding Officer of the pioneering bathyscaphe Trieste II, led the groundbreaking underwater surveys of the wreckage sites – the first-ever detailed examinations of what happened to these lost nuclear submarines. Hear his firsthand accounts of descending into the abyss, the haunting sights on the ocean floor, and the duty of seeking answers for our fallen shipmates.
It's my personal honor to also welcome my real brother – a fellow veteran – sharing his own sea stories. His first time at sea was my last, both serving aboard the Sturgeon-class attack submarine USS L. Mendel Rivers (SSN-686). From the control room to the memories that last a lifetime, this episode bridges generations of submariners.
