The first U.S. Congressional investigative hearing was held by the House in 1792 to investigate the devastating military defeat of General Arthur St. Clair's troops by Native American forces, establishing early precedent for congressional oversight and the power to examine government failures, with early hearings often focused on military or financial matters.
Navarro, a former White House trade advisor, was convicted of two counts of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the January 6th attack. He began serving a four-month prison sentence in March 2024, becoming the first former White House official to be imprisoned for a criminal contempt of Congress.
A long-time Trump ally, Bannon was also convicted on two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to provide documents or testimony to the January 6th committee. After a series of appeals, he began serving his four-month sentence in July 2024.
