Juvenal’s Satires is a collection of 16 poems written by Decimus Iunius Iuvenalis in the late 1st and early 2nd centuries AD. It is one of the most influential works in Western literature, defining the "Juvenalian" style of satire: bitter, pessimistic, and fueled by righteous indignation.

Unlike the playful, conversational satire of Horace, Juvenal’s tone is often one of "savagery," famously claiming, difficile est satiram non scribere ("it is difficult not to write satire") when faced with the corruption of Rome.

Core Themes and Structure
The Satires are divided into five books, charting a shift from explosive rage to a more detached, philosophical cynicism.

Social Decay: Juvenal laments the decline of the old Roman virtues (mos maiorum). He views Rome as a "filthy city" where wealth and foreign influence have displaced merit and tradition.

The "Great Inversion": He is obsessed with the idea that social hierarchies have flipped—former slaves are now wealthy, and the noble-born are forced to beg or perform in theaters.

Daily Life and Danger: He vividly describes the physical dangers of Rome: collapsing buildings, frequent fires, and the threat of being mugged or hit by falling debris from high-rise apartments.
