“Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen have firmly rejected suggestions that Greenland should come under U.S. control, following Donald Trump’s appointment of a special envoy to the territory.

In a joint statement, they stressed that national borders and state sovereignty are protected by international law and cannot be violated. The leaders said Greenland belongs to its people and warned that fundamental principles were at stake, adding that they expect full respect for Denmark and Greenland’s territorial integrity.

Trump’s announcement comes weeks after the White House, Greenland, and Denmark took part in the annual U.S.-Greenland Joint Committee meeting in Nuuk. After the Dec. 8 talks, the committee said it had reaffirmed its commitment to a strong, forward-looking relationship based on mutual respect and shared interests.

In March, ahead of Vice President JD Vance’s controversial visit, Trump said the U.S. would “go as far as we have to go” to acquire Greenland.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa voiced “full solidarity” with Denmark and Greenland on Monday, stressing that territorial sovereignty is a fundamental principle of international law.
