In this dark take on the well-known creature from Greek Mythology, Dwayne Johnson is at the peak of his physical and emotional acting ability as Asterion (The Minotaur), a legendary Cretan Warrior whose horrific fate will be the subject of many stories of legend. After the king of Crete displays divine arrogance and incurs the wrath of the gods upon his people, a young Cretan named Asterion is selected to serve as the sacrifice to appease the gods. As Asterion undergoes the alchemy to transform himself into the Minotaur (which includes both his loss of humanity and painful fusion of human and animal; including horns growing out of his skull and the eventual loss of all self-control due to being consumed by rage), he is a warrior who fought nobly for his country and loved his family as a devoted father. Watching a man go from a heroic soldier to a creature confined to a maze and completely aware of all that he has lost and the gradual disintegration of his sanity because of his now almost completely animalistic nature is heartbreaking.

Practical Effects/Prosthetics are utilized in the film to depict Asterion's terrifying transformations into the Minotaur, which utilize body horror and make you feel every bone break and reform into something monstrous. There will be flashbacks to Asterion's life before he became the Minotaur, depicting the family he protected and the honor he upheld; contrasted with the savage world he has become today where he is the nightmare that parents tell their children to keep them in line. The labyrinth serves as the physical representation of Asterion's fractured mind and the impossible architecture of it reflects a mind that can no longer differentiate between its own identity as a human being and a monster, and/or a mind that can no longer differentiate between being a predator and prey. What distinguishes this from your typical monster movie is the exploration of the curse from the creature's point-of-view, depicting how legends are born from tragedies and how history remembers creatures like the Minotaur without ever questioning what made them into such nightmares. Expect intense action as Asterion battles those sent to kill him, but also a part of him wishes they would succeed so that they could end his suffering; expect philosophical themes regarding identity and what makes us human when our bodies seem to be betraying everything we believe about ourselves; and expect a performance from Dwayne Johnson that demonstrates his capabilities for dramatic and tragic pathos, far beyond action-hero type roles.
