Why it's special: A dreamy, atmospheric sophisti-pop masterpiece about love, loneliness, and city nights. Paul Buchanan's heartfelt vocals over shimmering synths make it timeless. It was their biggest US hit (#10 on Billboard's Alternative chart) and got a huge boost recently when Taylor Swift referenced it in her song "Guilty as Sin?" from The Tortured Poets Department ("Drowning in the Blue Nile / He sent me 'Downtown Lights'").
