On January 21, 2026, a violent incident began around 2 p.m. in San Jose, California, near 900 Capitol Expressway. An armed suspect entered a car dealership and stole a green Corvette, fleeing before officers arrived.

San Jose Police Department (SJPD) used a tracking system and helicopters to locate and pursue the vehicle south on Highway 101 into San Benito County, reaching Hollister.
In Hollister, around 3 p.m., the suspect abandoned the Corvette near Buena Vista Road and Westside Boulevard after a slow-speed pursuit with Hollister police and San Benito County deputies. He exited armed, leading to a shooting exchange (details on who fired unclear). No local officers were injured.

The suspect fled on foot, was located again nearby, resulting in another shooting. He then carjacked a second vehicle (a white sedan) at gunpoint and drove north back toward San Jose, firing shots during the pursuit.
The chase ended in downtown San Jose near Julian Street and Highway 87 (close to Terraine Street). The suspect crashed into another vehicle, exited, and exchanged gunfire with officers. He attempted to carjack another vehicle but was struck by a police vehicle. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the final confrontation, an SJPD sergeant was shot by the suspect and hospitalized. He is in critical but stable condition and expected to survive.
