And clashing tongues sing rival hymn,
The will lies written, hearts still cry,
Which solemn word will let him die?
Who shall name the final way?
Justice calls, we dare not stray.

The healer’s vow, the kindred’s plea,
The patient’s whispered last decree,
Between the law and mortal soul,
Two hidden currents wrest for hold.
Where hides mercy in the law?
Modest chains are all we saw.
