Breaking down the word
GENTLENESS/MEEKNESS
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted."
Galatians 6: 1

In the Bible, "gentle" (often linked with "meek") does not mean being a pushover, a doormat, or allowing people to run you over. Instead, biblical gentleness is defined as "strength under control". It is a conscious, disciplined decision to restrain your power, authority, or right to retaliate, choosing to act with kindness and grace instead of harshness.
Here is a breakdown of what "gentle" means in the Bible:
1. The Greek Definition: "Strength Under Control"
The Greek word commonly translated as gentle or meek is prautes (or praus).
The War Horse Metaphor: Prautes was used to describe a wild stallion that had been broken and trained for battle. It still had all its power, speed, and ferocity, but its strength was now completely under the control of the rider.
Not Weakness: It is not a lack of power or a timid personality. A weak person cannot be truly gentle because they have no strength to restrain; they are simply helpless.
2. A Choice, Not a Personality Trait
Gentleness is a "fruit of the Spirit" (Galatians 5:22-23), meaning it is a character trait developed by God's power in you, not just a passive, timid nature.
Voluntary Restraint: It is choosing not to retaliate even when you have the power to do so.
A "Strong Hand": It is often described as having a "strong hand with a soft touch".
3. How Jesus Was Gentle (But Not a Pushover)
Jesus described Himself as "gentle and humble in heart" (Matthew 11:29), yet He was not passive:
He confronted the Pharisees with harsh truths.
He drove money changers out of the temple with a whip.
He was gentle with the broken and repentant, but bold against arrogance and hypocrisy.
4. What Gentle Is NOT
It is not being a Doormat: Being gentle does not mean letting people destroy you or disrespect you.
It is not Cowardice: It is not running away from conflict out of fear.
It is not Silence in the Face of Injustice: True biblical gentleness speaks the truth in love; it does not remain silent when it should defend the weak.
5. Key Distinctions
Gentle vs. Weak: Weakness is a state of being. Gentleness is a choice.
Meekness vs. Passive: The meek person is rarely provoked, but quickly appeased, because they are not ruled by ego, but by self-control.
Summary: The goal of biblical gentleness is to be like a well-trained warhorse—powerful, but completely obedient to God, using that power for good and not for self-centered revenge.
