What is Idolatry?

The definition of idolatry is the worship (excessive devotion) to false gods or dieties. Idolatry violates the first two commandments by elevatingcreated things above our Eternal & Glorious God!The most common form of idolatry in the Bible is the worship of images that were thought to embody pagan deities.

Exodus 20:3-6: "You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments."

Psalm 99: 5: “Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at His footstool-He is holy.”

Revelation 4:11: “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.”

Leviticus 19:4: "Do not turn to idols, nor make for yourselves molded gods; I am the Lord your God."

Exodus 23:13: "And in all that I have said to you, be circumspect and make no mention of the name of other gods, nor let it be heard from your mouth."

Matthew 4: 10b: “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.”

1 John 5:21: “Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen."

Genesis 31:19: "Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel had stolen the household idols that were her father’s."

Genesis 12:1b: "...Get out of your country, from your family and from your father's house..."

2 Corinthians 6:17: "Therefore, “Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.”

James 4:4: " Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God."

Galatians 5: 1: “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”

Jeremiah 9:24: "But let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in
these I delight,” says the Lord."

1 Cor 1:31: "That, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.”

Ezekiel 14:6: “Therefore say to the house of Israel: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Repent! Turn from your idols and renounce all your detestable practices!’”
