Spiritual Rebellion – Idolatry or Occult Practices

Similar to how covenant violations are breaches from within the relationship, spiritual rebellion, idolatry, is the act of forming new, unauthorized covenants with foreign gods, principalities, and spiritual systems outside of Yahweh’s jurisdiction. In the Heavenly Courtroom, these actions open legal doors for spiritual oppression, because they constitute an active agreement, a contract, signed not with the ink and paper, but with speech, ritual, and the will itself. Each act of rebellion becomes a transactional exchange, and heaven records it as a covenantal shift of allegiance. Let’s look at what Paul says and grab a greater understanding. He tells us to stand against these things. To watch out for the devils methods, or schemes.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” KJV (Eph 6:12-13)
Covenant with False Gods or Idols
(Exod. 20:3–5; Deut. 27:15)
In the Holy Scriptures, idolatry is always portrayed and treated as spiritual adultery and contractual treason. Never is it considered just an accident or mistake, it is very serious.
The Legal Dynamics
• Idolatry rewrites loyalty.
When a person bows, sacrifices, honors, or centers their trust on something other than God, they enter a functional covenant with that object or deity.
Jer 2:11, “Has a nation changed gods when they were not gods? But My people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.
1 Cor 10:20-21, “No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.” Note:(In the ancient world (including Israel, Greece, and Rome), a covenant was sealed or renewed by sharing a meal at a table with the one you were entering agreement with.)
• Heaven sees idolatry as a signed transfer of allegiance.
Just as Israel entered covenant with Yahweh through words, rituals, and obedience, idolatry creates a rival contract, one the enemy uses as legal evidence to claim rights of influence.
Ex 34:12-13, “Watch yourself that you make no covenant with the inhabitants of the land into which you are going, or it will become a snare in your midst.”
Scriptural Witness
• Idolatry as Violation of the Exclusivity Clause in a Marriage Covenant
Exod. 20:3–6 frames idolatry as adultery against a jealous Husband, it is the opening clause of the covenant contract given at Sinai. In Hebrew covenant structure, the first commands always establish exclusive loyalty, just like a marriage vow.
Ex 20:3-6, “You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”
God frames His covenant with Israel using marital language, and other Scriptures make this pattern unmistakably clear.
Isa 54:5 “For your husband is your Maker, Whose name is the Lord of hosts;”
Jer 31:32 “…’My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,’ declares the Lord.”
Jer 3:8 “And I saw that for all the adulteries of faithless Israel, I had sent her away and given her a writ of divorce,”
Ezek 16:32-33 “You adulteress wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband!”
The covenant at Sinai was a marriage contract, and breaking it was marital betrayal. This is why idolatry brings generational consequences: it is covenant treason in that marriage contract.

• Secret Idols as Legally Binding Covenants
Deuteronomy 27:15 shows that idolatry does not need to be public to be binding. God pronounces a curse not only on the one who makes an idol, but on the one who hides it, proving that even secret agreements carry full legal weight in the Heavenly courtroom. Throughout Scripture, God exposes “idols in the dark” (Ezek. 8:12), “idols of the heart” (Ezek. 14:3), and “hidden devoted things” (Josh. 7), showing that concealed allegiance is still real allegiance. A hidden idol is a hidden covenant, an unseen transfer of trust that Heaven records as a genuine spiritual contract.
Deut 27:15, “Cursed is the man who makes an idol or a molten image, an abomination to the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.”
This verse reveals a profound truth about covenant law in Scripture: before Heaven, a hidden idol is just as legally binding as a public one. The act of hiding it increases its seriousness, because secrecy implies intentional agreement. In biblical covenant structure, idolatry is basically forming a rival contract. And Moses is declaring that even if a person tries to cloak that contract in the shadows, the spiritual transaction is still registered in the courts of Heaven.
God treats secret agreements as real agreements
The curse is not pronounced merely upon the act of crafting an idol, but upon the one who hides it, indicating that the location is hidden, the allegiance is hidden, the agreement is hidden, but the covenant still stands. This is consistent with the entire biblical witness:
Ezek 8:12, “12 Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The Lord seeth us not; the Lord hath forsaken the earth.”
God declares that secret sin carries public consequences
Psalm 90:8, “Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.”
Secret agreements are not secret in the divine court. They stand as evidence of covenant breach. And Heaven treats “hidden idols” as binding because covenant is formed by desire, agreement, loyalty, trust, alignment of the heart, etc. These do not require a public audience. A contract does not become more or less binding depending on who witnesses it, it is binding because the signer wills it. In the same way, secret idolatry is covenantal because, the heart worships, the will consents, the mind agrees, the person aligns themselves. Therefore, even in darkness, the spiritual contract is real.
The point of the verse is clear: Heaven reacts to hidden idolatry as covenant treason, because the unseen places of the heart are still legal territory. This is why the curse is automatic, because one is in agreement with it. The idol itself has no power.

Practical Modern Parallels
Idolatry today takes many forms: Placing ultimate trust in money, success, fame, or human strength. Obsessive dependency on relationships or substances Worship of self, ego, or a personal image. Engagement in spiritual philosophies that replace God (New Age, universalism, etc.) Every idol is brandishing a counterfeit contract competing with the covenant of Christ.

• Consulting Mediums, Witchcraft, or Divination
Deut 18:10-12, “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”
I have heard countless times that this is just “spiritual curiosity”, however, it is the deliberate opening of a doorway to unauthorized spiritual authorities, whether you realize it or not, whether you meant it or not! You are literally giving evil spirits a legal contract to influence your life however they want. And they WILL use it.
The Legal Dynamics
These practices require invocation, consultation, or participation, all of which are legal actions in the spiritual realm. When someone seeks information, protection, power, or guidance from any supernatural source other than God, they are entering a contractual exchange with spiritual beings who operate in rebellion to Him. This transaction gives demonic forces legal jurisdiction to influence, deceive, and torment.
Scriptural Witness
• Deut. 18:10–12 lists these practices as “detestable” because they place a person under the government of a hostile kingdom.
• Saul’s consultation with the medium of Endor (1 Sam. 28) demonstrates the catastrophic consequence of appealing to unauthorized revelation.
• Acts 19:18–20 Where occult practitioners publicly break their spiritual contracts and burn their books.
• Revelation 21:8 Where sorcery is listed among the covenant-breaking sins that bring final judgment.
These passages affirm that occult engagement is forbidden behavior, and a spiritual allegiance that stands in direct opposition to God’s covenant.
Modern Parallels
The same spiritual contracts occur through: Tarot readings. Psychic consultations. Astrology as guidance. Invocation rituals. Energy healing involving spirit guides. Channeling, seances, and ancestral summoning. Witchcraft, Wicca, spell-craft, or “manifestation magic”. Ouija boards, etc. Even when done “for fun,” these acts form legal agreements with the unseen realm.
Idolatry does not have to be public to be binding. Heaven counts a secret idol as a signed agreement; a rival covenant formed in the darkness. The prophets repeatedly show that hidden idols, whether carved or inward, carry the same legal weight as overt rebellion. Secret allegiance opens the same doors of spiritual authority and invokes the same covenant consequences.
