We also talk about Peter’s warning that scoffers will arise—not only unbelievers, but even those who claim to be believers—questioning the truth and authority of Scripture. Using the flood as an example of God’s past judgment, we reflect on Peter’s reminder that the present world is reserved for a future judgment. Yet, at the heart of this passage is God’s mercy: His patience is meant to lead people to repentance, because He does not want anyone to perish or spend eternity separated from Him.
