Hey friends — it’s Leaflit! In today’s video I’m talking about the controversial idea that hormonal birth control may not just affect reproduction — it might also influence the brain and behavior in ways we haven’t fully appreciated yet, and how that intersects with culture and politics.
Millions of women around the world use hormonal contraceptives — from pills to rings and implants — to prevent pregnancy and manage health issues like heavy periods or endometriosis. But research is showing that birth control does more than just stop ovulation; it can change how the brain processes emotions, stress, memory, and decision-making.
Here’s what science actually says:
Hormonal birth control influences the brain’s emotion and memory processing. A recent study found that contraceptives may shape how women experience emotions in the moment and remember emotional events later, which might affect mood and reaction to stress.
Brain structure and stress response may be altered. Research has found that hormonal contraceptive use is linked to changes in stress reactivity and brain activation during emotionally charged tasks, and even structural differences in areas involved in emotion regulation.
Scientists are still learning the full picture. A large review of decades of research shows there is documented evidence that hormonal contraceptives can affect brain function and behavior, but the exact mechanisms and long-term consequences — especially at the population level — are still not well understood.
So what does this mean for society? It doesn’t mean birth control is “evil” or that all women behave a certain way because of it — that’s not what the data shows. Instead, what we can say scientifically is: hormonal contraceptives interact with *brain and body chemistry in ways that may influence emotional processing, memory, and stress responses. Many women do report mood changes and emotional highs and lows while on the pill.
In this video, I’m going to break down:
What the research actually shows about birth control and the brain
Why it matters in the context of culture and behavior
How it doesn’t mean one specific political outlook is caused by birth control
If you’ve ever wondered whether and how birth control affects the brain and emotions, this video cuts through the misinformation and looks at what real science says — and what it doesn’t say.
