"The Kama Sutra" by Mallanaga Vatsyayana [FULL AUDIOBOOK]
The version of "The Kama Sutra" read by Mark F. Smith is a widely recognized unabridged recording of the classic Hindu text, originally released through LibriVox on August 26, 2010.
While the original Sanskrit text dates back to roughly the 2nd or 3rd Century CE, this specific audio production uses the famous (though controversial) 1883 English translation by Sir Richard Francis Burton and Forster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot.
Executive Summary
Contrary to its modern reputation as solely a "sex manual," Vatsyayana’s Kama Sutra is actually a comprehensive guide to the art of living, emotional fulfillment, and the nature of love. The text is structured into seven parts:
1. General Principles (Part I)
The book opens by defining the three goals of human life: Dharma (virtue), Artha (worldly success), and Kama (pleasure). It discusses the "64 Arts" that a cultured person should master, ranging from singing and dancing to magic and carpentry.
2. Sexual Union (Part II)
This is the most famous section, detailing the "arts of love." It categorizes individuals by physical size and temperament, describes various forms of embracing, kissing, and "love-play," and catalogs the famous sexual positions.
3. Courtship and Marriage (Parts III & IV)
Vatsyayana provides advice on finding a wife, the rituals of courtship, and the conduct expected of a virtuous woman. It also explores the complex social dynamics of the "household," including the management of multiple wives and domestic life.
4. Relationships and Society (Parts V & VI)
These sections offer a surprisingly candid look at the social mores of ancient India. They discuss how to approach the wives of others (and why it is often dangerous) and provide extensive guidance for courtesans—who were high-status, educated women—on how to gain and keep a lover's affection.
5. Occult and Attractiveness (Part VII)
The final section covers "Vashikarana" (the art of attraction), offering recipes for aphrodisiacs, perfumes, and charms intended to increase one's desirability and physical prowess.
