"The Black Phone" is a 2021 supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson, based on the 2004 short story by Joe Hill. The film is set in 1978 and follows a kidnapped boy who communicates with the ghosts of the killer's previous victims through a disconnected phone.
In a suburban neighborhood of North Denver, Colorado, a serial child abductor known as "The Grabber" is on the prowl. Finney Blake, a shy 13-year-old boy, becomes his latest victim and is trapped in a soundproof basement. In his prison, a disconnected black rotary telephone on the wall begins to ring, allowing Finney to communicate with the spirits of The Grabber's previous victims.
The ghosts, who include his friend Robin, use the phone to pass on information and lessons from their own failed escape attempts, helping Finney plot his own survival and fight back against his captor. Meanwhile, Finney's younger sister, Gwen, who has inherited her mother's psychic abilities, experiences prophetic dreams about the abductions and uses them to help the police in their investigation. The story culminates in Finney using the information from the other victims to overpower and kill The Grabber.
The film features strong performances from its main cast, especially the young actors.
Mason Thames as Finney Blake, the abducted protagonist.
Madeleine McGraw as Gwen Blake, Finney's sister with psychic abilities.
Ethan Hawke as The Grabber, the masked, sadistic serial killer (a rare villainous role for the actor).
Jeremy Davies as Terrence Blake, Finney and Gwen's abusive, alcoholic father.
James Ransone as Max, The Grabber's eccentric brother.
