UK Seeks Reset with China - Keir Starmer Meets Xi Jinping

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has visited China, marking the first trip by a British prime minister in eight years. He met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, with talks lasting about 80 minutes, longer than scheduled.

The visit comes as the UK faces slowing growth and a sharp fall in exports to China, down nearly 53 percent year on year in 2025. China is the UK’s third-largest trading partner.

Both sides called for more stable cooperation despite disputes over Hong Kong, human rights, cyber security and influence concerns. Outcomes include lower Chinese tariffs on British whisky and visa-free travel for UK visitors.
