On the night between 28 and 29 January 2026, Niger's capital city, Niamey, was under attack. Shooters, later identified as mercenaries allegedly paid by foreign countries, fired gunshots around Diori Hamani International Airport. However, Niger's defence and security forces moved swiftly to subdue the violence before it spread, securing the city and shutting down the attempt at destruction. The following morning, President Abdourahmane Tiani visited the attack site and revealed his knowledge of the situation's details.
