In October 2020, Raquel Rodriguez (also reported as Rachel Rodriguez), a San Antonio political consultant, was featured in undercover videos by Project Veritas. She described herself as a "ballot chaser," discussing tactics like handling multiple mail-in ballots, offering incentives (e.g., gift bags) to voters—often seniors—and assisting with changes on ballots, such as crossing out votes and initialing alterations. She acknowledged some actions were illegal and could lead to jail time, while claiming influence over thousands of votes in local races. The videos prompted an investigation by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's office. On January 13, 2021, she was arrested and charged with four felonies under the Texas Election Code: election fraud, illegal voting, unlawfully assisting voters with mail-in ballots, and unlawfully possessing an official ballot. Conviction could have meant up to 20 years in prison. She was released on bond.By early 2023, the case stalled significantly. The Texas AG's office withdrew from prosecution due to disqualification (citing an appeals court decision and procedural issues like misleading affidavits), filing notices suggesting dismissal. No trial, guilty plea, or conviction occurred, and no major updates emerged through 2025 or 2026. The charges appear effectively dropped or unresolved, with no prison time served. Rodriguez initially claimed parts of her statements were exaggerated or false. This case highlighted 2020 mail-in voting concerns but resulted in no proven widespread fraud or conviction.
