Reverend Catania teaches us about a much misunderstood term and concept, not only in the English language, but also in the Greek. The Hebrew word "Sheol" is variously translated as "grave,""pit,"and "hell" in the old testament. The Septuagint translators struggled with this term. The closest notion we have in English is the term "gravedom" to indicate the realm of the dead. It is not a term like "hell" where bad people are supposed to go, but it was often translated that way. Why? Because the predominant Greek religion of the time had such a place they called "hades" named after one of their pantheon of gods and goddesses. "Sheol" was just the neutral place where the dead await resurrection.
