In his June 3, 1753 journal entry, John Wesley records part of a letter he received from a clergyman, who relays the testimony of a pious and trustworthy woman. About thirty years earlier, while engaged to a man named Richard Mercier, she experienced a vivid nighttime apparition in which Mercier appeared at her bedside with the left side of his head bloodied and crushed. Shortly afterward, the family learned through newspaper reports that Mercier had been killed in Dublin when a church bell struck the left side of his head. Wesley offers no interpretation, presenting the account simply as a remarkable and unsettling correspondence.
