In this episode of The Lethal Dispatch, we dive deep into what makes magic-users in Lethal Fantasy fundamentally different from the spellcasters of Dungeons & Dragons 5E, Pathfinder, and Shadowdark.

Magic in Lethal Fantasy isn’t safe, convenient, or interchangeable. Every magic-user is born with innate abilities that make them truly unique — no two mages are ever the same.

We break down how cantrips in Lethal Fantasy are not combat filler or infinite damage buttons. Instead, they are randomly rolled, deeply personal abilities that shape a mage’s identity and reputation in the world. Cantrips might cause a mage’s eyes to glow like distant stars, allow them to summon roses from thin air, leave glowing runes where they touch, speak with animals, bend cheap metal, or make firelight dance into faces and memories. These effects happen outside of spellcasting and exist to make magic feel strange, rare, and alive.

We also explore the three possible expressions of the magic-user, each representing a different way the aether manifests:
• A scaling arcane shield that protects its bearer
• A summoned mythical weapon forged from magic itself
• Raw, personalized arcane bolts shaped by the caster’s will
