In this episode, we are going to talk about how we are trying NOT to get stranded on our homestead!

Hello and welcome back! In May of 2022 we sold our home in Denver and most everything we own to move onto our 36 acre homestead property in the high desert of SE Arizona. Follow along as we build our hyperadobe homestead from scratch!

It's important to be able to take a break from your homestead whether it's for an emergency, a mental health break, taking a vacation, or just giving yourself a day to go do something fun! We were actually really worried about this and we ended up having an emergency situation where I had to go up to Seattle because my sweet mom was really sick unexpectedly. We are very fortunate to have some great friends and neighbors that were able to step in and give us a hand.

I will tell you what, losing my mom in October 2024 was one of the toughest things I have ever gone through. My dad passed away unexpectedly when I was a junior in high school, so I am no stranger to dealing with the loss of a parent, but this was really, really hard. My mom and I were very, very close and we talked every single day. She was my best friend, confidant, and spiritual mentor. Her faith was so, so strong and I know that I will see her again some day. She was an incredible human and she loved unconditionally. She always was there for me and my kids no matter what. I miss her so much and it's been a tough loss. I am so thankful that she was my mom.

Ya'll, life is short. Don't wait to do what you want, live the life you want, be the person you want to be, do good in this world, help others, love without reservation, trust God, pray, be kind, and share your faith. My mom was such an unbelievable example of all of this...I wish all of you could have known her...she was really awesome and helped me be the person I am today.

Make sure you have some sort of plan in place, especially if you have animals. It's easy to take time away from a homestead that doesn't have animals or plants that need care, but most of us are raising things that need attention.

The recent fires in California that we just witnessed in early 2025 are also a great reminder to have an emergency plan in place. Make sure you have a go-bag ready and also make sure that you have a plan for the living things you are responsible for.

We also continue work on what we are calling the "corridor" section of our paddock. Doug has been cobbing it when the weather is warm enough and it has been an AWESOME addition!
