Drawing a line between actual psychiatric conditions and infections like Lyme and other vector-borne diseases may be more complicated than desired. I know for me personally, my Lyme disease symptoms started when psychiatric conditions typically begin to develop: slight hints in my mid-teen years, and then exploded at 24 when I sustained two concussions. This led to misdiagnosis and many wasted years.

In this interview clip with Dr. Shannon Delaney, she explains that it's nearly impossible to differentiate between vector-borne diseases and actual psychiatric conditions, especially when those symptoms present when mine did. This is made even more complex as many who contract Lyme don't remember being bitten by a tick. As the mental health sphere grows to embrace vector-borne diseases, psychiatrists and other mental health professionals will need more tools in their toolboxes to face these complicated, persistent diseases.
