PCRは、米国のキャリーマリスによって発明された技術です。この功績によって、１９９３年ノーベル化学賞が授与されました。彼の生い立ちを含めて、波乱にとんだ人生が自伝的に「マリス博士の奇想天外な人生」という著書に記されています。マリス博士は、この本の中でHIVがエイズの原因であるという科学論文が存在しないことを主張しています。HIVがコッホの４原則を満たさないことがから、その存在を疑う根拠にもなっています。マリス博士は、HIVの発見でノーベル生理・医学賞を受賞したフランスのモンタニエ博士にこの件を糾したところ、モンタニエ自身もHIVがエイズの原因であるという科学論文示すことが出来なかったことを記しています。多数のHIV研究者が長年これに関する研究を行ってきたにも関わらず、HIVがエイズの原因であるということを示すことが出来ないのは、一体何を意味するのでしょうか。このような事実を講演会で発表しようとすると、この公演を阻止する活動が露骨におこなわれたことも明らかにしています。
