ウイルスとは何かに関する定義ははっきりしません。遺伝子の自己複製をする有機体から生物が生まれたという進化論から考えると、生物の定義から考えたほうがウイルスの概念をつかみやすくなります。生物は、脂質の細胞膜で覆われた細胞からできており、遺伝子DNAを自己複製します。核を持たない細菌の仲間から核を持つ原生動物が出来て、やがて多細胞生物に進化、そして脊椎動物、その中に哺乳類が進化して、やがて人類が誕生しました。ウイルスは、すべての生物の内部や周辺にいて、生物の作り出すエネルギーを利用して、自己複製をします。
　このようにして考えると、私たちの体内外にウイルスがいるというのは、ごく普通のことであり、ウイルスの世界の中に私たちが生きているといっても過言ではないのです。このようにウイルスは、生物との関係の中で、地球上で遺伝子の自己複製を繰り返してきたわけです。ウイルスは恐ろしいというイメージは作られたものであり、ウイルスとの共存関係が基本にあるからこそ、私たちが生きてこられたわけです。地球の生命進化の歴史という観点から考えると、いまの私たちが居ることが、ウイルスとは共存関係が出来ていることの証です。ウイルスだけでなく、体内外の微生物や、多種多様な生物とは共存関係にあるからこそ、私たちが生きていられるわけです。病原体としてのウイルスの方が稀なのです。
