Remember folks, for some reason people like to live in fear. And when they're fearful you can easily divide them into the "good guys" vs. the "bad guys". Then you can appeal to their bullying nature by making them think the "bad guys" are a risk to them, the "good guys".
Worked in Maoist China, Hitler Germany, Stalin Russia, and many, many other places.
Your best thing to keep your sanity is recognize it and hope the spell wears off soon.
And always laugh.
