Why Couldn’t Jesus Carry His Cross?

Despite how scrawny Jesus is in several depictions, being raised by a carpenter and then hanging out with fisherman, I doubt he was a waif. That said, He was unable to carry His cross and the Romans needed to recruit Simon to help carry it for Him. Why?
