DESCRIPTION:

Joe Bailey, a retired firefighter who began his service in Allensworth, is one of the last residents of Allensworth and the first Black officer in the Tulare Sheriff's Department. Today Joe (78 years old at the time of this interview) is a volunteer Patrol Officer working for the Sheriff-Coroner Department of Tulare County. Lori and I were honored and blessed of God to meet and talk with Joe. In our opinion Joe Bailey is a national treasure.

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION:

In 1908, Colonel Allensworth, Professor William Payne, Rev. William Peck and Mr. J. W. Palmer decided to establish a town where Black Americans, many of whom were former slaves, could own their own homes, govern themselves and achieve the "American Dream". Today Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, a schoolhouse, a Baptist church, businesses, homes, a hotel and various others structures symbolizes the rebirth of Colonel Allensworth dream of an independent town where Black Americans could live in control of their own destiny.

SCRIPTURE:

Exodus 6:8

'I will bring you to the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you for a possession; I am the LORD.'"
