I think we do not realize how much our personal lives impact the lives of others. I am speaking in terms of not only our personal circles, but also the lives we come into contact with from day to day. Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 1:5, "For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake." At the end of that verse he highlights "what manner of men" they were for the sakes of those they visited.
This caught my eye lately as I thought about what manner of person I am around others. And not just those I know, but those that I do not know, but see all the time, or come into contact with in brief moments. The big question came into my mind, "What are you leaving them with?" So today, the question is expanded to everyone. What manner of persons are you among the people of this world? What are you leaving them with?
Even in our suffering, trials, tears, and day to day life that seems dull and fruitless, we are leaving something behind. This has nothing to do with an external religious robe to be put on with a Christian badge. It has everything to do with character. Your character is who you are more than your reputation. Your reputation is only who people think you are. People expect you to be human, and in your human struggle, your heart is always loving the Lord. And that is what pushes past negative temptations. And that is what they see.
Gideon asked the king and prince of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, "What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king." Whom do we resemble? What are we leaving people with? Let us leave them with the same profound effect as that ancient king and prince wherever we go. And let their words be the same words of all we come into contact with for the rest of our lives. For we are all the children of the great King of Kings. Let the world see that you resemble Jesus Christ and no one else.
