The survival of sea turtles remains at risk due to many years of intensive hunting for their shell, meat (used for soup) and fat. Hunting is currently under control, but these animals are still threatened by fishing nets that kill around 40,000 specimens a year. Another major threat is coastal development in nesting areas, which prevents females from laying eggs and makes it impossible to reproduce.

Most species are migratory and roam the oceans, orienting themselves with the help of the Earth's magnetic field.
