DESCRIPTION:

On Tuesday, May 7th, 2019 the Frederick Douglass Foundation of California, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, the Center for Urban Renewal and Education, the Senior Pastor of the Mount Moriah 1st Baptist Church joined forces to protect the rights of women. All women.

According to research performed by the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), roughly 77% of sexual assaults go unreported. Among the reasons for this unacceptably high number is the fear of not being believed and concerns about how the justice system will handle the incident. The minority community has a storied past of unseemly interactions with the justice system and we have an opportunity here to try and change that for all victims, many who have suffered in silence for too long.

AB 1510 is a step in the right direction, but it too narrowly only aims to hold USC accountable. I am writing you to ask that you consider amending AB 1510 so that we apply the same standard of justice to all California institutions and not just USC.
