Dr. Maria Montessori started her first school ‘Casa dei Bambini’ in the slum area of San Lorenzo, Italy. The children attending this school were neglected individuals of low socio-economic background, whose parents worked all day. Due to the high crime rate, the government decided that these children needed some sort of overseeing, and so they requested Dr. Montessori to look after them.
