This passage reveals the work of Nebuchadnezzar to counteract the dream of chapter 2. By building a statue of solid gold, Nebuchadnezzar rejects the vision of subsequent empires. By mandating worship to this statue, Nebuchadnezzar petitions his gods to continue his empire. This incident follows Nebuchadnezzar's praise of Israel's God. In a short time, the king went from recognizing the Source of true power to trying to usurp that power. Nebuchadnezzar's plan comes with the threat of death to anyone not in compliance. Believers must recognize the activity of the devil. We must be on guard, knowing that even in the good times, Satan is looking for an opportunity to thwart God's plans and attack His people.
