CHAPTER 015 - BUSINESS AS USUAL

This chapter begins with a return to a glimpse inside the mind of Elze. It turns out that she's been in contact with the Jaze Clan for six years on behalf of the Keepers, and she knows that they run slaves. She wants to know what Baen knows about her lost little birdies, and she grows impatient as she and her entourage is delayed at the gate.

A panic goes through the Monument army when the delegation from the Keep arrives, and after everyone is gathered up from all around the property they are ushered into the mine where Elze and her people can not find them.

Lowen gets down to business as he moves his camp to the eastern side of the valley and he prepares his hephaestite powder in earthenware jugs which he loots from a fallow pigsty. He hunkers down until nightfall at the Dirty Woman brook where it goes under the palisade.

Elze is finally allowed into Monument, and when she meets Baen she finds it turns out that the man is completely out of his mind from the beating taken by Paul. As he drifts in and out of different time periods, he mistakes her for his dead sister, and when he falls into a terrible seizure she knows that it's time for her to go.
