The move toward Bitcoin and cryptocurrency is a move from a centralized financial currency system to a decentralized one. There’s another crucial currency system in which society relies, and that’s reputation currency, or social capital. And that historically had almost always been decentralized. Now, however, Big Tech is trying to centralize it, which is one of the most dangerous threats we face: centralized censorship. Here I describe how gossip — the stuff of decentralized reputation networks— is crucial to the health of society, freedom, and truth itself.
