Are we seeing the end of civilization as we know it?

A thought occurred to me as ai was listening to a podcast yesterday. Was there a moment when citizens of the Roman Empire knew it was over? At what point did they know it was all about to end?

Was the fall of Afghanistan the beginning of the end for western civilization? Clearly nations like Taiwan and Ukraine have reason to be concerned, but now we have western nations admitting they can no longer count on the United States to back them up.

With that in mind, China is going to dominate even the western world with its economic influence. They have already been willing to do business with the Chinese despite their use of slave labor and concentration camps. How can we expect them to join in any coalition against China now that they no longer trust the United States to back them up?

This may be the beginning of the end, unless we turn it around right now.
